Frankfurt & the Euro
The center of commerce in Europe dating back to the 13th Century. Frankfurt became so popular for trade, that the Roman Empire granted military protection to people traveling there for commercial purposes. Boat transport via river to Frankfurt was also very popular in medieval times. Problems rose due to the vast amount of different currencies being brought to Frankfurt. The Roman Empire decided to fix the top 5 most popular currencies, creating the first ever official exchange rate in European history.
The Euro originally began with 12 countries agreeing to use the same currency. This idea of a common currency across countries in Europe has helped the economy and infrastructure significantly in Europe. Today, the Euro is the official currency of 20 countries across Europe.
In the future, Frankfurt plans to be home to a central anti-money laundering office.
